CUBE 2010 Participant Proposals: Group 3, National Junior College

Group 3

School: National Junior College

Proposal: Reminiscence

Concept: PRESERVATION IN TRANQUIL SPRING

Blending in the elements of a scenic environment, Site 3 reflects the rich history of the past juxtaposed with the culture inherent in the region. Adopting the Zen motif, we have incorporated many wooden elements to retain the warmth and earthy feel to the residential atmosphere.

Starting with the old Muslim cemetery which will be redesigned to be a memorial park, grasses will be trimmed into a lawn. Antique lamp posts will be put in place and together with the removal of creepers, the cemetery aims to be tranquil space of reflection and reminiscence about the past and perhaps even about the future.

As for the canal where boardwalks will be incorporated on both ends, the bridge will also be changed into a wooden one to serve as a connector, thus allowing for the inhabitation of the spaces of our built environment and not the solid walls, roofs and columns that shape it.

Health and fitness takes on a high level in the area, where the HDB block in the middle of the cluster of 3 has been void out to put in place a running and cycling track. In replacement of the STD clinic, two blocks of 5-storeyed buildings will be placed behind the HDB flats to serve as multi-storey car parks and for a cluster of hardware stores. A football field will also be put into place to serve as a site of recreation for the children of the residential area.

Shop houses beyond Kelantan Lane will be preserved, although they will take on a different usage. They will be used for a childcare centre, an elderly holistic centre and we will be shifting the STD clinic to this area to make way for the football field.
